This weekend was one for the history books! I had been looking forward to it for more than a month. For those that don’t know, I own a brand (Proud Mary Fashion) that shares space with the Plus Bus in Los Angeles. The Plus Bus was celebrating their 1 year anniversary of opening their brick and mortar shop (I joined them in November of 2016.) Not just that, but the day before was the Torrid Pool Party in Orange, CA. At a damn mansion. Bloggers, models, and influencers of all kinds were in town to attend both events. That means I got to bask in the glow of so many beautiful fat babes!
Saturday ended up being cloudy and rainy but we didn’t let that stop our fun. I attended with a group of friends, thanks to Anastasia Furrow (plus model and influencer based in Salt Lake City.) We all put on our best looks and headed to the party in good spirits. There were so many stylish babes in attendance, as well as cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, popsicles, flower crowns, portraits, photobooth, and an amazing DJ.
I got to squeeze friends from near and far, dance, meet new people, and wear one of my original designs (found here) over this torrid swimsuit (found here.)
The next day I woke up and instead of being sad that party was over, I was excited to see everyone again at the Plus Bus. And it did not disappoint. I swear this was the best event I have ever been to, and I’m not just saying that. Jen and Marcy really know how to throw a party. There was a real deal photo booth thanks to posers in a booth, snacks care of cricket crumbs, tattoos from inkbus, the one and only DJ Dazzler and vendors galore (including my dear friends from Chicago LastCraft Designs and Gigi Jiggles Nails.)
Everyone was dressed to impress and ready to mingle. I wore my new favorite piece care of Navabi (found here.) Can I just tell you about this dress? Not only has a print not spoken to me so intensely before, but it’s incredibly well-made. I can tell this dress is going to last me for YEARS. I had some cute platform shoes on but my feet couldn’t take it so I threw some flats on for this photo and the rest of the night. But you can totally dress this look up or down. The cut-away sides are really great and keep this look fresh.
What a killer weekend!?! Thank you to everyone that blessed LA (and me) with your presence. And congratulations to the Plus Bus babes! You are amazing ladies that have created a beautiful safe space. I am grateful to know you, work with you, and love you. Here’s to SO MANY more years of fashion and friendship! <3
One of the first things I said in the new year was that I planned on being much more visible in 2017. Well, here I am, about as visible as I can be. I have spent a lot of time down in Orange County with Corissa of fat girl flow and she took these photos of me.
Nothing is centering to me quite like the ocean. When I need to take a step back and reset, there’s nothing like it. There is something so humbling and calming about standing next to the water and remembering how big the world around you is.
I’ve spent a lot of my life being insecure about the size of my thighs, but I’ve come to really love and appreciate them. In the coming year, I want to apologize less and feel freer to really express my style.
When I saw this outfit, I knew it had to be mine. I love sheer, and I know I always will. The skirt (found here) is really daring but now that we live in Southern California, the weather allows for less coverage. The sheer rose top (found here) is something out of my 90’s dreams.
I had the pleasure of shooting Kat (from style ethic) for proud mary fashion a couple of weeks ago. We had such a blast that we decided to hang out all of last weekend and shoot around Las Vegas. She is a stylist so we pulled our closets together and she threw on some really fun looks. I am practicing my craft as a photographer and it’s so fun to have passionate people to collaborate with. Usually I am styling shoots and not behind the camera but truth be told I love it! I love all aspects of a photo shoot, so I can’t wait to work on more. Below is part one, our shots from night one.
I seem to have two moods: all black everything and eccentric 80’s princess. I tend to wear a lot of black in the Winter and then throw on a bright lip and fun jewelry. Black is a timeless color for your wardrobe but it’s also fun to focus on the styling. You can keep it understated like I did today, or really play up color in your makeup and accessories.
This vintage shirt dress was such a dream find. There are really lovely details that keep it from being too simple. The collar and buttons are satin. The shoulders have just a touch of volume to make the sleeves pop. It’s also pretty sheer which is great because it’s modestly cut. I wore it with a short slip to make it a little sexier. It’s cut away from the body so it drapes perfectly. It’s so hard to find shirt dresses in my size, especially because I carry a lot of weight in my lower abdomen and hips so they usually never fit me right. To keep it from being boring, I played with textures. The jacket is a mesh moto jacket from asos (found here.) The suede mules are also from asos (similar here) and are pretty easy to walk in since they have a shorter block heel. Bless retailers for finally starting to carry fashionable wide width shoes in a variety of styles. I have felt so left out of owning beautiful shoes because they never fit my fat feet! I plan on doing a post with my favorite wide fit options soon.
I love to see plus size women in drapey cuts. We’ve been told for so long to belt everything, that we need to define our waist. But I say no! Wear whatever you want, it doesn’t need to allude to an hourglass shape. Fat girls can have fun with silhouettes too!
I also threw on these vintage mod earrings I just scored. They’re two toned and really subtle but definitely nod to the 60’s. I love a bright lip, especially when the rest of my outfit is understated. This bright pink shade is called Royal Raspberry and it’s less than $15 at Sephora.
It’s less than 2 weeks until we make the big move to LA. I am really anxious about it and know that everything is about to change in a major way.
We are trying to take in our favorite places in Vegas before we go. Today we went to appreciate some of the wall art we love and eat Po’ Boys from Zydeco downtown.
If you’re like me then virtual window shopping is a pastime of yours. I was searching online for unique gift ideas and decided I would put together a guide of lovely things that might brighten up the day of your loved ones. I was aiming more towards small gifts for stylish friends under $60. I ended up choosing items from etsy sellers because I was looking to spotlight makers. Take a peak and let me know what you think. If you have suggestions, leave them in the comments!
Marble everything, please. I, like many, have had a love of marble print lately. I did some marble print pieces at knockout pdx this past September in my collection because I can’t get enough. It’s timeless and chic. Plus, it’s so fun to mix prints. These pouches (found here) come in a choice of white or black with the option to monogram. Hello! I feel like having a monogram pouch is a level of adult I would like to reach.
Planters are a great gift for your loved one with a green thumb. Personally, I am still working on my ability to keep a plant alive for more than a few months but so far, succulents are the way to go. These lovely handmade succulent planters (found here) are sure to brighten up your friend’s office or home. It’s a unique gift, that will last. I especially love the roughness of a handmade ceramic item. It’s delicate and unique.
Flower crowns have been everywhere for a few years but your friend needs something better: a CRYSTAL crown. This crystal tiara is customizable as far as the wiring option. You can even do a rose gold. It’s just what is needed to get through these cold Winter months as the beautiful ice queen we all deserve to be. Snag it here.
Have a friend that loves Drake? Or just never calls you on your cell phone anymore? This banner is perfect for them. Find it here. You can also check out the shops other banners if this one isn’t what you’re looking for.
I’m not actually sure why I don’t own this pin yet, are you? Pink champagne with overflowing bubbles? CHECK. Grab this cute and affordable pin for your best bubbly babes here.
Oh. My. God. How cute is this ring holder/catch all dish? I had my eye on a similar dish on asos which sold out. Luckily, you can find almost anything on etsy. Bonus: you’ll be buying from the maker directly! This is such a sweet and thoughtful gift. Check it out here.
Thanks for reading! I hope you found some goodies.
It’s getting dark so early here this Winter so it isn’t easy to shoot my looks unless I am out of the house early. As someone that tends to be more productive at night, I have been starting my day later.
I quit my day job a week ago and I am still getting in the groove of making myself buckle down and get work done. It’s been such an adjustment but I know once we are in LA full time (less than 3 weeks) I will be able to get so much more work done.
Some of you may be aware of our struggles moving out West, and for those of you not, well that’s a story for another day. However, we are in this weird limbo of feeling relieved, excited and cautiously optimistic about moving. We are definitely ready to move on from Vegas.
Don’t get me wrong, Vegas is a nice place to explore. But our hearts are in California, and I can’t wait to shoot, style, and bring you all fun vintage fashion!
We’re making some big changes, so of course I shed a few inches of hair. Today I wore this great 90’s inspired slip dress from torrid. It’s on sale now and you can find it here.
I paired it with a couple seasons old leather jacket from Asos (similar here) and these cute flats from torrid. Bag and Chanel earrings are vintage from my own collection.
So my blog was deleted and here I am starting from scratch. Excuse the roughness as I work out the kinks in this space and figure out how I want to utilize this forum.
A little about me for those that aren’t familiar: My name is Jessica, I am a brand owner with a passion for bringing vintage and new/edgy fashion to plus size women. However, I wanted a separate space where I could really spotlight other brands and second-hand fashion. I am a strong believer in the sustainability of vintage, and have fun mixing old pieces with new.
Fashion has always been important to me, as a way to be political and express myself. I learned to love myself through style. Fashion is art, and so is your body. I want to get rid of the notion that plus size people should adhere to some arbitrary fashion rules set in place to make it appear that we take up less space, or to make others more comfortable with our bodies. Take up space! Wear what you want! You only have one life, so live it as loudly and brightly as you want. Change up your style constantly or keep it simple. It doesn’t matter, because the only person that matters is you.
I also love photography and styling, so you may see some examples of my creative work here. I love being surrounded by people that inspire and push me to think outside the box, and to continue pushing boundaries.
I hope you enjoy your time with me. I enjoy putting out content that will hopefully empower women of all shapes and sizes. You are beautifully you!
